Metal Powder and Additive Manufacturing

As a metal powder manufacturer within the GMH Gruppe, ProMateria combines in-house metal powder production with additive manufacturing, engineering and downstream processing to deliver ready-to-install components from a single source.

The portfolio includes high-nitrogen stainless steel (HNS) powders, tool steel powders and stainless steel powders, while additional materials are available for additive manufacturing projects across a wide range of industrial applications.

Through gas atomization, particle size distribution and powder characteristics are tailored to the respective manufacturing process. From customized metal powder and production using the MoldJet® process to heat treatment, machining and surface finishing, ProMateria supports the route from material selection to the ready-to-install component.

Building on the metallurgical expertise of the GMH Gruppe, ProMateria manufactures high-nitrogen stainless steel powders based on proprietary materials such as Cronidur® 30. Combined with extensive experience in powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing, this enables the development of material solutions for demanding applications requiring high corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and reliable component performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which metal powders does ProMateria offer?
ProMateria manufactures high-nitrogen stainless steel (HNS) powder in-house, including Cronidur® 30 (1.4108), P900 (1.3816) and P2000 (1.4452). The portfolio also includes tool steel powder and stainless steel powder for additive manufacturing and powder metallurgy applications.

Which additive manufacturing processes are ProMateria’s metal powders suitable for?
P900, P2000 and Cronidur® 30 are suitable for processing by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB). Depending on the material, manufacturing process and customer specification, other metal powders are designed for additive manufacturing processes such as PBF-LB or DED, as well as for sinter-based processes such as Metal Injection Molding (MIM).

For applications involving subsequent sintering, the material, particle size distribution and other powder properties are tailored to the requirements of the respective process.

Which particle sizes are available?
ProMateria manufactures metal powders with particle sizes in the +0/−150 µm range. The exact particle size distribution depends on the material, manufacturing process and customer specification. P900, P2000 and Cronidur® 30 are each available with a nominal particle size distribution of 15–45 µm.

Does ProMateria also offer additive manufacturing in addition to metal powders?
Yes. In addition to in-house metal powder production, ProMateria provides engineering, material and design optimization, simulation, additive manufacturing, heat treatment, machining, surface finishing, as well as cleaning and packaging, supporting projects from material selection to the finished component.

Which additional materials does ProMateria process for additive manufacturing?
In addition to HNS, tool steel and stainless steel, ProMateria processes low-alloy steels, titanium alloys such as TiAl6V4, nickel-based alloys such as Inconel 718 and Inconel 713 C, copper and engineering ceramics.

These materials are part of the additive manufacturing processing range and not the portfolio of metal powders manufactured in-house.

Are ProMateria’s HNS materials low in nickel and suitable for biocompatible applications?
Yes. The HNS materials contain very low levels of nickel: less than 0.1 wt.% for P900, less than 0.05 wt.% for P2000, and a maximum of 0.25 wt.% for Cronidur® 30. They are therefore suitable for applications with requirements regarding biocompatibility, skin contact, or the avoidance of nickel-rich alloys. Suitability for the specific application should be assessed on a project-by-project basis.

Does ProMateria offer Metal Powder for MIM?
Yes. ProMateria produces metal powder for Metal Injection Molding (MIM). Material selection, particle size distribution and powder properties are tailored to the requirements of the respective sinter-based processing method.
