Engineering Steel
Buderus Edelstahl supplies forged bars in low- and medium-alloy engineering steels, including quenched and tempered steels such as 42CrMo4 and 34CrNiMo6, the gearbox steel 18CrNiMo7-6 and NiCrMoV steels for highly stressed pressure applications.
Metallurgical expertise, controlled manufacturing processes and tailored heat treatment enable high strength, toughness and consistent mechanical properties, even in larger cross-sections.
From mechanical and plant engineering and gearbox manufacturing to mining, oil and gas and the defense industry, Buderus Edelstahl’s engineering steels are designed for demanding operating conditions and individual customer requirements. On request, the bars are supplied heat-treated and machined, or processed further into customized open-die forgings.
Customers benefit from the long-standing experience of Buderus Edelstahl and the combined capabilities within GMH Gruppe – from steelmaking and forming to heat treatment and machining.
Applications for Engineering Steel
Mechanical Engineering
Materials for components that matter
Components in mechanical and plant engineering must perform reliably under high mechanical and dynamic loads. Buderus Edelstahl’s engineering steels combine high strength with toughness and consistent material properties – including demanding component geometries and larger cross-sections.
This makes them a reliable material choice for highly loaded components such as shafts, drive components and other forged parts. For general engineering, the proven quenched and tempered steel 42CrMo4 is available; for heavy-duty equipment and large-scale plant engineering, CrNiMo and NiCrMoV steels such as 34CrNiMo6. Buderus Edelstahl also manufactures customized open-die forgings for the defense industry.
Gear Manufacturing
High-performance steels for reliable drive systems
Gear components transmit high loads and are expected to perform reliably over long service periods. This places demanding requirements on the material.
As a material supplier to gearbox manufacturers, Buderus Edelstahl provides forged barstock and open-die forgings for large industrial gearboxes, wind energy gearboxes and marine gearboxes. The gearbox steel 18CrNiMo7-6 (1.6587) is designed for highly loaded transmission shafts and ring gears, and the quenched and tempered steel 42CrMo4 (1.7225) for shafts and drivetrain elements. The focus is on defined material properties, reliable heat treatment and high material quality – for durable, high-performance components.
Mining, Oil and Gas
Engineering steel for high pressure and cyclic loads
Components in drilling, production and mining systems operate under high mechanical, cyclic and pressure loads. For these conditions, Buderus Edelstahl supplies forged steel bars in NiCrMoV grades: 4330V MOD Efficient and 4330V MOD Premium are modified versions of AISI 4330 and combine strength, toughness and fatigue resistance, even in larger component cross-sections.
For corrosive operating conditions, martensitic and precipitation-hardening stainless steel grades such as F6NM (1.4313) and 15-5PH complement the range, including fluid end blocks for high-pressure pumps in the fracking industry. Buderus Edelstahl also develops material solutions for applications that do not fit a standard category.

For highly loaded transmission shafts and ring gears in industrial, wind energy and marine gearboxes, Buderus Edelstahl supplies the gearbox steel 18CrNiMo7-6 (1.6587). For shafts, rollers and drivetrain elements, the quenched and tempered steel 42CrMo4 (1.7225) is a suitable choice.
Buderus Edelstahl does not manufacture gearboxes; it supplies gearbox manufacturers with forged bars and open-die forgings.
The steel is melted in an electric arc furnace, alloyed in a ladle furnace and vacuum degassed. Low-carbon stainless grades such as F6NM additionally undergo VOD treatment (vacuum oxygen decarburization). Targeted calcium treatment modifies non-metallic inclusions and improves transverse toughness.
Yes. In addition to the as-forged condition, Buderus Edelstahl supplies machined barstock and machined large forgings, including turning, milling and deep-hole drilling. Machining capabilities cover forgings weighing up to 120 tonnes.
