Tool Steel by Schmiedewerke Gröditz
Tool steel by Schmiedewerke Gröditz is used for the production of tools, molds and standard parts, for example in aluminum die casting or plastic injection molding.
The product range comprises plastic mold steels, die steels, hot-work steels for die casting and stainless steels – available in annealed or heat-treated condition. Both conventionally produced and ESR-remelted grades are available.
Schmiedewerke Gröditz is an integrated steel plant with two powerful open-die forging presses (27 MN and 60 MN) and three advanced ESR facilities. Gröditz specializes in large-scale forgings, including die holders, mold frames and tooling materials for giga-casting applications. Flat material is available from 250 mm thickness, round material from 300 mm diameter.

Tool Steel from Gröditz: Material Groups at a Glance
Schmiedewerke Gröditz produces tool steel in its own steel plant and supplies flat, square and round material for tools, molds and standard parts. The portfolio covers five core material groups and their applications:
- Plastic mold steels – For plastic injection molding, compression molding, blow molding and plastic extrusion. These include pre-hardened grades such as SWG XPM and SWG 2711mod as well as ESR-remelted grades for high-gloss polishing such as SWG XPM VICTORY ESR.
- Hot-work steels for die casting – For high- and low-pressure die casting (HPDC, LPDC) and press hardening, for example the EX grades of the VICTORY range. SWG EX8 VICTORY ESR is designed for exceptionally large, complex die casting tools, up to giga- and mega-casting dies.
- Die steels – For closed-die forging applications, including SWG 2714 and SWG 2714mod for large-scale forging dies, both supplied in pre-hardened condition.
- Cold work tool steels – For shearing, blanking, punching, coining, bending, cold and thread rolling, industrial knives and powder metal compaction. Examples include SWG 2080, SWG 2363 and SWG 2379.
- Stainless steels – With improved corrosion resistance for plastic mold making, for example SWG CRM13S, SWG 2083mod VICTORY ESR and SWG OPTI N+.

Applications
Plastic Molding
High-performance solutions for demanding applications. For decades, we have been a reliable partner to the tool and mould-making industry as well as to the plastics processing sector.
We produce standard and special steel grades tailored specifically for plastic injection moulding, compression moulding, blow molding and plastic extrusion applications.
High- and Low-Pressure Die Casting
Die casting tools are exposed to high thermal loads, cyclic stresses, and demanding operating conditions.
Our tool steel solutions combine excellent toughness with high heat resistance to reduce the risk of premature tool failure. This supports longer tool life, reliable performance, and stable casting processes.
Die Forging
Forging dies and die holders must withstand high mechanical and thermal loads while maintaining dimensional stability throughout their service life.
Our tool steel solutions provide an optimal balance of wear resistance and toughness to minimize damage and premature failure. This enables reliable performance even under demanding forging conditions.
Press Hardening
Press hardening places particularly high demands on tooling due to intensive wear, elevated temperatures, and repeated mechanical stress.
Our tool steel solutions offer superior wear and tempering resistance to maintain performance under these demanding conditions. The result is increased tool life, reduced downtime, and greater process reliability.
Shearing, Blanking, Punching/Piercing & Trimming
Cold work shearing tools require excellent wear resistance and high compressive strength to maintain sharp cutting edges throughout long production runs.
Our cold work tool steels are designed to withstand demanding mechanical loads while minimizing wear and the risk of premature tool failure. This supports high dimensional accuracy, extended tool life, and reliable production processes.
Coining, Bending, Drawing & Embossing
Coining, bending and embossing tools require high strength and wear resistance while maintaining dimensional stability under continuous mechanical stress.
Our cold work tool steels provide the toughness and processability needed for precise forming operations and consistent component quality. Their excellent machinability also supports efficient tool manufacturing and maintenance.
Cold & Thread Rolling
Cold and thread rolling tools are exposed to very high contact and compressive loads.
Our cold work tool steels combine high compressive strength, wear resistance, and toughness to maintain tool geometry and reliable performance over long production cycles. This supports consistent component quality, extended tool life, and stable, cost-efficient processes.
Industrial Knives & Shredding Tools
Industrial knives and shredding tools are exposed to high impact, cutting and abrasive loads in operation.
Our cold work tool steels combine high wear resistance, toughness and edge stability to maintain cutting performance even under demanding conditions. This supports consistent cutting quality, extended tool life, and reliable, cost-efficient processes.
Powder Metal Compaction
Powder metal compaction tools are exposed to high compressive loads, friction, and abrasive wear during repeated compaction cycles.
Our cold work tool steels combine high compressive strength, wear resistance, and toughness to maintain dimensional stability and reliable tool performance. This supports consistent component quality, extended tool life, and stable, cost-efficient production processes.

Schmiedewerke Gröditz supplies plastic mold steels, hot-work steels for die casting, die steels, cold work tool steels and stainless steels. Selected grades are also used for press hardening applications. The grades are either conventionally produced or ESR-remelted and are delivered in annealed or heat-treated condition.
SWG supplies flat, square and round material with piece weights from 1 t to 56 t, and round material up to Ø 1,400 mm. The maximum available dimensions for each grade are specified in the relevant material data sheet. Other dimensions are available on request.
ESR stands for Electro-Slag Remelting, a refining process used to improve steel cleanliness and homogeneity. ESR-remelted grades offer higher cleanliness levels than conventionally produced grades, making them particularly suitable for mold applications requiring high-gloss polished surfaces.
ESR tool steels are used in applications with high requirements for surface quality, polishability and cleanliness. SWG XPM VICTORY ESR, for example, is intended for high-gloss polishing and high-precision etched surface textures. It meets a cleanliness of K1 ≤ 10 according to DIN 50602 and a polishability of N1/A-1.
For the conventionally produced SWG XPM, the material data sheet states K4 ≤ 20 and a polishability of N2/A-2. This grade is used for etched surface textures, among other applications, and offers high texturing reliability according to the data sheet.
The delivery condition depends on the selected steel grade. SWG XPM, for example, is supplied in a quenched and tempered, pre-hardened condition. SWG 2343 VICTORY ESR is delivered annealed and reaches its service hardness through hardening and tempering after pre-machining.
SWG 2711mod is one of the grades suitable for processing fiber-reinforced plastics. For plastics with high fiber contents, Schmiedewerke Gröditz offers SWG GPM58 VICTORY ESR, with hardness levels of up to 58 HRC after vacuum hardening, and SWG GWS62 VICTORY ESR, reaching up to 62 HRC after vacuum hardening.
At glass or carbon fiber contents of 40% and higher, conventional mold steels are subject to severe wear – SWG GPM58 VICTORY ESR was developed specifically for these applications.
Schmiedewerke Gröditz primarily supplies globally operating stockholding distributors as well as end users and is supported by its own service centers in Burg and Istanbul. All products are manufactured to order according to customer specifications.
The management system of Schmiedewerke Gröditz is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001. The current certificates and related documents are available in the Downloads section.
