Open-Die Forgings
When components must perform reliably for decades, quality begins with the steel itself. As an open-die forging manufacturer with fully integrated in-house steel production, Schmiedewerke Gröditz melts, forges, heat-treats and machines on a single site.
Our own 50-ton electric arc furnace, ladle furnace and VD/VOD plant, together with an ESR double plant, supply the ingots that feed our powerful 27-MN and 60-MN forging presses. This integrated production route supports homogeneous material properties and controlled quality from steelmaking through to the finished component.
We manufacture open-die forged components weighing up to 45 metric tons for demanding applications in power generation, hydropower and heavy machinery. Through ingot casting, upsetting, elongating and controlled forming operations, we produce large forged components with consistent quality. For complex geometries, targeted reheating between forging stages enables precise shaping and supports the required material properties.
Because melting, forging, heat treatment and machining all take place within one coordinated process, our in-house ingot steel forms the foundation for open-die forgings designed for demanding operating conditions.

FAQs
What are the maximum dimensions possible for open-die forgings?
Schmiedewerke Gröditz manufactures open-die forgings with a piece weight of up to 45 metric tons for finished components. Shaft-type components can be realized up to 2,000 mm in diameter and 9,500 mm in length, while disk-type components are possible up to 4,000 mm in diameter and 1,500 mm in thickness. Rings can be manufactured with outer diameters up to 4,000 mm and widths up to 2,000 mm. Other dimensions are available on request.
Which materials are processed for open-die forgings?
Schmiedewerke Gröditz processes unalloyed, alloyed, and high-alloyed steels from its own steel production. The portfolio includes structural and engineering steels, nitriding and case-hardening steels, tool steels for cold-work and hot-work applications, plastic mould steels, ledeburitic steels, and stainless steels, including austenitic, ferritic, duplex, martensitic grades. Materials are supplied in accordance with national and international standards or customer-specific requirements.
For which applications are open-die forgings particularly suitable?
Open-die forgings from Schmiedewerke Gröditz are used in critical applications where reliability, durability and long service life are essential. Typical applications include steam turbine shafts and generator shafts in power generation, runners for hydropower plants (Pelton, Francis, and pump turbines), compressor shafts, rolls for mechanical and plant engineering, continuous-grain-flow forged crankshafts, primary and secondary lids for nuclear waste management, as well as components for oil & gas, mining, and petrochemical plants.
Which certifications does Schmiedewerke Gröditz hold?
Schmiedewerke Gröditz is certified to ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management) and ISO 50001:2018 (Energy Management).
The ISO 9001 certification has been held since 1991, documenting continuous quality assurance for over three decades.
In addition, we hold a DNV approval as manufacturer of Steel Forgings (including stainless steel forgings, shafting and machinery, and crankshafts), KTA 1401 confirmation of suitability for nuclear components, PED 2014/68/EU and AD 2000 approval for pressure-equipment materials, and Lloyd’s Register approval as a manufacturer of steel forgings.
How long does it take to manufacture an open-die forging?
Production times depend on component dimensions, material grade, heat treatment requirements and machining scope. For a precise assessment of lead times and available capabilities, our sales team will be happy to review your project requirements and provide guidance tailored to your application.
