GMH Gruppe Driving the Future of Renewable Energy
Wind turbines operate under extreme forces, impacting every part of their structure. To ensure reliability and efficiency, high-performance materials are essential. That’s where GMH Gruppe comes in. Renowned for its quality, reliability and competitive pricing, GMH Gruppe is the trusted partner for producing critical components that support seamless energy generation.
Precision and Performance: From Analysis to Production
This project was about more than just steel. It was about precision, reliability and trust. GMH Gruppe developed specialized forged components designed for wind turbines gearboxes. To meet stringent strength and toughness requirements, the team conducted in-depth analyses in collaboration with the customer. An important milestone: Georgsmarienhütte GmbH was the first steel company to have its Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) calculation method for the product certified by TÜV Süd, reaffirming its leading position in the Green Steel.
Delivering Reliability – Every Time
The components supplied by GMH Gruppe stand out for their exceptional formability and quality. These high-performance steels are processes worldwide into rings, shafts and connecting elements, serving industries beyond wind power, including hydroelectric plants, shipbuilding and LNG power generation. This versatility underscores the critical role GMH Gruppe’s steel across multiple sectors.
Sustainability at the Core: Circular Economy in Action
For GMH Gruppe, steel production and sustainability go hand in hand. At the heart of this commitment is circular economy:
- Steel scrap is collected, processed and recycled in the company’s own electric arc furnaces (EAFs), ensuring that nearly all materials are reused.
- Almost 100% of residual materials are transformed into new products, reducing waste and maximizing efficiency
- Compared to traditional blast furnace-based steelmaking, this method cuts CO₂ emissions by up to 80%.
- Even the byproducts – like slag – are repurposed, for example, in road construction demonstrating GMH Gruppe’s holistic approach to sustainability.
This efficient, closed-loop system turns scrap into high-tech steel without compromising quality.
From Raw Material to High-Tech Components: A Seamless Value Chain
The process begins with recycled steel scrap and results in highly specialized components ready for deployment in offshore environments. Every step in this value chain is optimized for both efficiency and environmental responsibility.
With its Green Steel strategy, GMH Gruppe is committed to achieving climate-neutral steel production by 2039. Already today, a significant portion of production runs on renewable energy, and innovative technologies like green hydrogen are being integrated to further reduce CO₂ emissions.
Powering the Future: Offshore Wind and GMH Gruppe
Offshore wind farms represent the future of renewable energy, and GMH Gruppe provides the foundation for these massive installations. Without robust, high-quality steel components, wind turbines could not efficiently convert wind into energy.
By adopting sustainable production methods, GMH Gruppe helps reduce the overall carbon footprint of wind turbines, reinforcing its role as a key enabler of green energy. The collaboration between GMH Gruppe and the wind power industry represents a shared vision of an emission-free future – where renewable energy and climate-neutral steel go hand in hand.
At the same time, the company continues to develop and refine advanced steel solutions to support the climate-neutral energy generation of tomorrow.
