Green steel from the electric arc furnace

    Our strategy

We have a clear goal, and we know how to achieve it. Our steel production is set to be climate-neutral by 2039. As an interim step, we want to halve our emissions by 2030. With our key technology of electric steel making and optimized processes, this is realistically feasible. It is not without reason that we have been one of the pioneers in the decarbonisation of the steel industry for over 25 years. On this basis, our steel production will be climate-neutral by 2039, and we will make a...

    Electric steelmaking: Our key technology

We continuously further develop what is the most sustainable technology for the steel industry. For more than 25 years, we have been producing steel at our site in Georgsmarienhütte in the most sustainable way there is: in an electric arc furnace. As a result, we save over one million tonnes of CO2 every year and are now just as much a pioneer in the industry as we were in 1994.

    We close cycles

Scrap recycling, steel production, and further processing of the steel at one site facilitate closed cycles that help the environment. Scrap is the foundation for our excellent products. We use 100% scrap metal in the electric arc furnace to make steel to order – the German industry average is a scrap rate of 44%. We also think in terms of optimised product and energy cycles and are constantly improving them – from the efficient reuse of by-products such as waste heat and slag, to logistics.

    Value stream: Increasingly sustainable

Climate-friendly logistics at our Georgsmarienhütte site, as well as new materials, save emissions by the tonnes. Recycling, meltshop, bright steel production and CNC components in one place – our Georgsmarienhütte site is one example of how intelligent logistics can make steel significantly greener. All the more when new materials arise on short routes that can help save on additional emissions in lightweight construction or further processing.

    Group-wide recycling

Closed cycle Scrap is the basis of GMH Gruppe’s steel production: Our steel is melted from 100% scrap. This makes our raw material recycling the pivotal point of our sustainable circular economy – not only at the individual location, but also across locations within GMH Gruppe, as the example of Mannstaedt shows.
