Open-die forgings supplied by GMH Gruppe meet the most exacting customer requirements in terms of material properties, precision and dimensional accuracy. These parts are used, in particular, in machines and equipment for the energy sector, in high-output engines, as components of storage and transport casks (Castor), and in numerous other sectors, including general mechanical and plant engineering, mobility and power generation.

Definition

GMH Gruppe produces its open-die forgings from high-grade stainless steels. The primary material – cast steel ingots – is shaped under highly skilled manual control precisely to customer specification on forging presses equipped with the necessary swaging and flat dies. On our high-performance 27 MN and 60 MN open-die forging presses, we produce forgings for every application, no matter how exacting. Building on more than 50 years of machining experience, we produce ready-to-install crankshafts of up to 25 tonnes tailored specifically to meet the customer's unique requirements.

Production process

From cast ingots with outstanding material properties – excellent cleanness, highly homogeneous microstructure, high resistance to wear and corrosion – we produce a raw, but very near-net, part in a number of forming operations, including upsetting and reducing the length and the cross-section of the ingot. For more complex geometries, it may be necessary to reheat the material between the individual process stages. Our production capabilities cover the entire value chain, from steel production in the electric arc furnace, via steel refining and the forging process, up to and including the ready-to-use part.

We use our full range of technical potentials to produce open-die forgings that perfectly meet our customers’ expectations and their requests for the most diverse geometries, specific heat treatments and a broad range of semi-machining and finish-machining options. We work with optimised material allowances, significantly reducing the need for downstream machining. We provide a wide range of services for our crankshaft customers, including prototype manufacturing, assembly and disassembly of mounted parts, as well as after-sales support that also includes damage and wear analyses.
