Chain steel

Chain steel

Georgsmarienhütte GmbH is a producer of high-performance steel that is especially suitable for the production of high-grade round steel chains. These chains are used in mining, in the offshore sector, as ship’s chains and in the lifting and conveying sector.

Definition

Chain steels are non-alloyed high-quality steels or alloyed stainless steels which, thanks to their high strength – given appropriate weldability –, are especially suitable for welded round-link chains. Non-alloyed chain steels are usually not heat treated. When alloyed steels are used, the produced chains are quenched and tempered. These steels  are used, for instance, in mining and ship’s chains, in the offshore sector and in lifting systems. Possible components: Steel chains, Round steel chains, Attachment chains, Roller chains, Lifting equipment, Connecting links and much, much more.

Production process

We produce chain steel materials, from which steel bar is made to extremely precise tolerances on our high-precision rolling-mill, in the electric arc furnace. We also deploy high-performance simulation systems and ultra-accurate analyses to ensure that our steels meet even the maximum demands made by chain manufacturers and their subsuppliers.

Benefits

Not just any old steel will do: our range of materials covers more than 500 grades – and the trend is decidedly upward. Because our customers again and again have special requirements for which we draw up new alloying concepts. Precisely tailored to the special challenges in the production of a round steel chain, we provide comprehensive advice as individual as your chain – from end to end.

  • Dependable long-term partner
  • Proven industrial expertise

Optimum properties and cost-efficiency

Chains are exposed to many diverse stresses: they are required to bear a high static base load, are subject to severe wear and are additionally exposed to sudden peak stresses – in extreme cases, accompanied by severely corrosive influences. The definitive factor in long service-life of steel conveying and lifting chains are, therefore, high mechanical strength and ductility properties combined with great resistance to the most diverse forms of corrosion. The optimisation of these materials properties must never be at the cost of economic criteria, however. In addition, tried-and-proven production processes and mechanical characteristics must never be forgotten. We view ourselves as a high-power partner for the chain industry and for conveying and handling systems, on the basis of our many years of experience in the design of ever more efficient materials. We will find technical solutions specifically matched to your needs. And the chain steel of tomorrow is already undergoing industrial field tests right now.
