Let’s go back a few years to the mid-nineties. At this time, C70S6 steel had just been launched, leading to the development of the world’s first crackable steel conrod. Due to its high carbon content, the microstructure of this steel was mainly pearlitic. This is in stark contrast to GMH’s 46MnVS5 steel, whose low carbon content makes for a significantly pearlitic microstructure with a higher ferrite content than C70S6. 46MnVS5 is strengthened by a high manganese content and the use of carefully selected alloying elements, which is achieved via precipitation hardening.
Subheading: Weight reductions of up to 10 percent
46MnVS5 enables weight optimisation in higher-strength AFP steels. In a car’s conrod, for example, the shaft cross-section can be reduced from 119 mm2 (when using the older C70S6 material) to a mere 92 mm2. This reduces the weight of this component by around 28 grams, or approx. 10 percent – a huge figure in the world of automotive construction.
