Energy efficiency is the megatrend when manufacturing components from steel. The aim is to reduce the energy consumption and thus the CO2 emissions. At the same time, there is an increasing demand for weight-optimized components made of high-strength materials in the automotive industry. In addition to the technological requirements, production process chain must be economically efficient to keep a competitive edge in the global market. In order to meet the requirements regarding material properties and economic efficiency, GMH has developed new and optimized steel grades, which get their final properties after controlled cooling from the forging temperature without additional heat treatment steps.
A new generation of precipitation hardening ferritic-pearlitic steels (PHFP Steels / AFP steels) achieves yield strengths of more than 900 MPa as result of the perfect-balanced microalloying concepts and the optimal microstructure. Precipitation hardening ferritic-pearlitic steels of this performance category can be used to meet future requirements, for instance as steel for the production of splitable connecting rods.
In comparison to PHFP steels the bainitic forging steels show a higher ductility in general. The final properties can be achieved by controlled cooling after hot and warm forming and can be improved by additional tempering. In several production applications, the micro-alloyed air-hardening bainitic steel 16MnCrV7-7 has already replaced quenched and tempered steel (QT steels) and PHFP-steel and shows a very good machinability in addition to a favorable alloying concept and excellent component properties. Furthermore, an air-hardening martensitic steel has also been successfully tested apart from further bainitic steels.
